Singer, Songwriter. He had a string of country music Top 10 hits in the 1980s. McDaniel decided on a career in music at age 14, after seeing Elvis Presley on television. After establishing himself in the bars and clubs of his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma, he briefly landed in Nashville before moving to Anchorage, Alaska, where he refined his songwriting and performance skills. When he returned to Nashville in 1976, he promptly signed a record deal with Capitol Records. McDaniel had his first success with the single "Have a Dream on Me" and his career really took off with "Louisiana Saturday Night", released in 1981. His biggest hit was "Baby's Got Her Blue Jeans On" (1984), which was nominated for a Grammy and a Country Music Award. He continued to perform into the 2000s, usually at the Grand Ole Opry, of which he became a member in 1986. In 1996 McDaniel was seriously injured in an accidental fall during a concert, and he suffered a heart attack in 2009. He died of cancer. (bio by: Gene Cross Jr)
