Martha was the daughter of Jackson "Jack" Billings and Margaret Clementine Porter, the wife of Lewis McDaniel Absher.

Martha age 3 first appears in the 1860 census living with her parents "Jack" Billings age 29 & Margaret Porter Billings age 28 & her brother Jessy age 2. Her family lives in the Lower Division of Wilkes, NC.

It is not understood as of this date if Jackson Billings served in the Civil War; but given his age, I am sure he did. By 1870 the Billings family has grown. Four more children appear in the census record with Jackson Billings age 40 Margaret Porter Billings age 38 Martha age 13 & Jessy age 11 (William age 8, Sarah age 7, John age 5, Emily age 2). The family lives in the Rock Creek area of Wilkes, NC.

By 1880 Martha has married Lewis Mcdaniel "Dan" Absher & they have a son "Coy" age 5 months born in December of the previous year (according to the 1880 Census Record). The census was taken in June of 1880. Martha, age 18 & Dan age 20; a young family just starting out. They live beside Jacob & Sarah Hall Absher; "Dan" Absher's parents, along side some of "Dan's" other siblings.

Martha has had 6 more children by the 1900 census, "Rossa" "Oliver" age 16 "Alfred Montgomery" "Gum" age 14 "Carrie" age 8 "Flora" age 6 & "Dewey Pedro" age 1. Tragically she has lost her first born daughter "Rossa" in the year 1886. As indicated by the census record; Martha has had 7 children, 6 living. "Martha Billings Absher is recorded to be born "October 1855" They are living in the Mulberry Township of Wilkes, NC. The same area where they lived in 1880.

"Dan" age 53 respectively & "Martha" age 54 respectively, have been married 31 years by the 1910 census. They have had 8 children 7 living. Their new addition by 1910 was my grandfather Raymond "Ramie" Council Absher who was born in 1901 & in the 1910 census is age 8. Martha's father "Jackson Billings" age 80 & widowed is living with the family. Martha's mother "Margaret Clementine Porter Billings" passed away in 1907. "Dan" & "Martha" have 3 other children at home "Carrie age 18" "Flora age 15" & "Dewey Pedro age 10". The Absher family lives in the same place in the Mulberry Township of Wilkes, NC.

Martha & Dan in the 1920 census record have a new addition to their family. A little girl "Stella". "Stella" was not their biological daughter. The story was told by my grandfather "Ramie" to my father "Jim Absher" that Stella's biological mother (a woman last name of Snyder) came to their home and asked "If Dan & Martha could take her infant daughter, and that she was unable to care for her." The woman never came around again, and of course Martha & Dan, the good people that they were, welcomed little Stella and she became "Stella Absher" daughter of Dan & Martha Billings Absher. The 1920 census is the only record that Stella appears in living with Martha & Dan Absher. She is married by the time of the 1930 census. Martha's father "Jack" age 89 lives still with the family in 1920.

The 1930 census record, records Martha & Dan Absher to be both age 72 respectively. My grandfather "Ramie" still lives at home. Dewey Pedroe "Roe" Absher & his wife "Bertha" & their four children live with them."Jack Billings" Martha's father has passed away in 1921.

Martha has lost her husband "Dan" Absher by the 1940 census. Dewey Pedroe "Roe" Absher & Bertha, along with their 8 children live with her. Martha passes away 28 Feb 1942 having lived a long life of 86 years. (Probable cause of death on Death Certificate - Rheumatism & old age).

It has been said of "Martha" that she was a good and kind woman.

No obituary was placed for Martha in the Journal Patriot. Research was done to locate one for her with no success. On Monday 23 Feb 1942, 10 inches of snow had fallen. The following Monday 2 Mar 1942 there was a second large snowstorm that increased 1 inch per hour during part of the day on top of snow that had not melted from the previous storm which had reached a depth of 8 inches in accumulation and more snow was expected. This could be the reason why no obituary was placed for her.

"Unfortunately" Martha's stone was badly damaged at some point. It is broken with no engraving left. Probably damaged when the cemetery for many years was left unkempt and logging took place through and around the cemetery. Her broken stone was left in place and a marker put down; provided by the Absher Family Cemetery Fund.
