John Alexander Clodfelter was the second of seven known children of Jesse Clodfelter (1804–1870) and his second known wife, Maria Hartman (1806–1845), who married 13 Jul 1930 at North Carolina. Jesse was first married to Magdalena Hege (1808-1829) on 02 Dec 1828. Jesse and Magdalena were the parents of no known children. After Maria died, Jesse thirdly married to Anna Rosina Fishel (22 Dec 1817-1881) on 04 Nov 1845 at Davidson County, North Carolina. Jesse and Anna were the parents of ten known additional children.

John married Nancy Adeline Hedrick (1834–1923) on 06 Oct 1859 at Edwards County, Illinois. John and Nancy were the parents of four known children, namely:

1. Edwin Jesse Clodfelter (1860–1951)
2. Osman Havillah Clodfelter (1861–1937)
3. Clara Louise Clodfelter Knoll (1863–1951)
4. Franklin George Clodfelter (1868–1886)

In 1870 the parents and all four children were living at Salem Precinct, Edwards County, Illinois. In 1880 the parents and all four children were living at West Salem Precinct, Edwards County, Illinois. In 1900 and 1910 the widow Nancy was living with her son Osman. Nancy was a first cousin of John's.
