Frederick was born to Kaspar Kuster and Barbara Sterchi in Minerva, Ohio. In 1836, the family moved to Malvern in Carroll County. Frederick was age three when his father died in 1839, and age five when the family moved to Stringtown in Richland County, Illinois. In about 1855, he left for Texas and there wed Rebecca Clark in Ellis County on June 17, 1856. There they had three children:
1) John Frederick on Mar 12, 1857
2) Henry Albert on Sep 1, 1861

On March 1, 1862, Frederick joined Colonel Henry Darnell's 18th Texas Cavalry, in Captain Franklin Lewis Farrar's company H, to serve the Confederacy (CSA). The 18th Texas was captured by Union forces at the Battle of Arkansas Post (Fort Hindman) on January 11, 1863, but company H, and Frederick, was on special assignment and avoided capture. Frederick was listed on the 18th Texas, company H, muster roll for Mar/Apr 1863 and furloughed from May to August. During this time, Company H was renamed company D under Colonel Charles Morgan's battalion of Texas Cavalry. Frederick is shown on the company D muster list for Sep/Oct 1863. During this time his wife was pregnant and a daughter was born:
3) Mary Jane "Margaret" on Mar 17, 1864

Frederick is thought to have died before then as there was no more war record of him after Nov/Dec of 1863, and no more children born. By 1870, Rebecca was in Preston Township in Richland County, Illinois living close to Frederick's mother Barbara Kuster and close to school for John and Henry.
