U.S. Border Patrol Agent Killed in Plane Crash
Hebbronville-- A McAllen resident working
a routine patrol for the McAllen-U.S. Border
Patrol Office died instantly Friday when the
plane he was piloting crashed in brush-covered
ranchlands of Jim Hogg County near here.
Weldon Smith, 40, was pronounced dead at
the scene about 3 p.m. Friday. Smith had
been a border patrol agent since Nov. 1,
1970. Previously he had been employed by
the Texas Department of Public Safety for
nine and-one half years.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m.
Monday at Cavalry Baptist Church in McAllen,
with Rev. Frank Pullin of McAllen Trinity
Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in
Valley Memorial Gardens, under the direction
of Virgil Wilson Mortuary.
Border Patrol Chief Gene Wood of the McAllen
office said Smith had been flying a single-
engine observation-type aircraft in cooperation
with ground units when the crash occurred.
Wood said he understood cause of the crash was
undetermined.
Crash site was estimated about 50 miles north
of Rio Grande City.
A native of Snyder, Texas, Smith was a graduate
of the 1957 Class of Snyder High School, and a
U.S. Army veteran. Smith had lived in McAllen
nine years.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Smith,
two sons, Jason Weldon and Terry Wayne
Smith, both of McAllen; four daughters,
Diana Michelle Smith of McAllen and Valarie Ann,
Sherri Nell, and Paula Jane, all of Longview.
Parents Mr. and Mrs. Earl Smith of Snyder, TX;
three brothers, Larry Lynn Smith of Abilene and
Jerry and Gerald Smith both of Dallas; two
sisters, Mrs. Gwendol Young and Janice Treat,
both of Dallas.
Pallbearers will be Milton Garrison, Joe
Esparza, Horace Caldwell, Horace Frakes, Dudley McClanahan,
and Steve Tann.
Honorary pallbearers will be border patrol agents of the McAllen office.
Weldon's and Annette's oldest daughter......Valarie Ann Smith, was adopted by Ronald Dale Bagley. (Find a Grave # 4388252) Valarie later married Roy Barnett.
