Also according to his obituary, he served in American Rifles, Co. G. 7th. Louisiana Infantry for the duration of the War. Wounded twice, first at the battle of Port Republic then at Gettysburg. He was a Corporal.
"Internment in the Metairie Cemetery in the vault of the Army of of Northern Virginia."
He was the husband of Martha Raynal McCulloch and I believe also her sister, Margaret McCulloch. Martha and Margaret are buried at Greenwood Cemetery, New Orleans, Orleans, Louisiana. His third wife is buried in Metairie Cemetery.
Father of two sons, Rev. H.J. Cumpsten (at Hangerman, New Mexico in 1913) and R.T. Cumpsten (in New Orleans in 1913) and two unmarried daughters.
There were several spelling variations of his name used on his Compiled Service Records of Confederate Soldiers Who Served in Organizations from the State of Louisiana. They include:
