Catherine was the daughter of David and Sarah (Miller) Bueghly. Catherine and her grandparents were born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. She married Samuel Boyd in 1853, in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.

In 1895, they and their children moved to Grundy County, Iowa, and later homesteaded between Bassett and Newport in Rock County, Nebraska.

Samuel was a Sergeant in Company D of the 133th Pennsylvania Regiment and fought in the battle of Bull Run during the Civil War.

Catherine was the first person to be buried on the family’s farm. According to family member ellen422, a Find a Grave contributor, “She was buried on this site with her grandson who died hours before her death. Samuel marked the graves with a petrified stump and planted cedar trees in the form of a cross. He carried water to the trees to insure their survival. Others buried there are: the son of Byron Boyd, Franklin A. Erskine 1898, Sister of F. Erskine, and Glen Tweed 1904–1910. There is currently no other information about these individuals.”

Catherine and Samuel had 10 children; John Charles 1855 and Byron C 1864 are the only two children not listed below.
