Nancy McKell, eldest daughter of William & Elizabeth [née Bell] McKell, was born in the bounds of Fairfield County, South Carolinaon August 23rd 1818. Her father was a native of County Armagh, Ireland and her mother, daughter of William Bell, a leading land owner in the area.
After her father died in July 1821, Nancy, her mother and siblings: David, James and Jane moved to Mississippi. They settled in Starkville; where her mother was a charter member of Starkville A.R.P. Church.
In 1841, Nancy married William Henry Cross. This union was blessed with the following known children:

William Nathaniel, MD (1848–1878)
Isabella Hasseltine {m. Gladney}(1852–1929)
David Bedford (1856–1896)

"Departed this life near Starkville, Miss. on the 30th of October 1869, Mrs. Nancy Cross, the wife of Maj. Wm. H. Cross, aged 51 years. Her disease was pneumonia. Mrs. Cross became a member of the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church in Starkville at the time of its organization about thirty years ago. She left a husband, four children."
