Elizabeth Ann Short was born in Hancock County, Illinois. She was living in Henderson County, Illinois, when she married Samuel Ewing, the oldest of nine children born to William Graham Ewing and Mary S Kellenbarger. They were married on 5 Mar 1857. Samuel and Eliza had two children.

Samuel enlisted in the service of his country in Henderson County, Illinois, as a Private, at the age of 30 on 8 Aug 1862. He mustered in Co K 84th Illinois Infantry on 1 Sep 1862 and mustered out as a Corporal on 8 Jun 1865 in Tennessee. He was engaged in the following battles: Perryville, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Mission Ridge, Tunnel Hill, Rockyface Gap, Resacca, Dallas, Pine Mountain, and Kenesaw Mountain.

After his discharge he returned to Illinois. In April 1867 Samuel and Eliza moved to Montgomery County, Iowa. Samuel's parents had moved there in 1854. Eliza and Samuel lived on a farm for 8 years. Samuel served as township clerk for 5 years, was appointed trustee, was elected county commissioner and served about 4 1/2 years. At this time he was living in West Township.

For many years Samuel was in the grain business.

Samuel died in 1922 in Sioux City, Iowa, at the age of 91 years. Eliza died in 1925 at the age of 88 years.
