Yost D. Miller, the seventh son of David and Elizabeth (Troyer) Miller was born in Somerset County, Pennsylvania March 20, 1814. He moved with his parents by wagon from Somerset County to Holmes County, Ohio when he was four weeks old. They camped under a tree in a wagon until his father had built a log house to move into. He grew to manhood, married and lived in Holmes County until about the year 1851 when he, with his wife and family moved by wagon to Elkhart County, Indiana.
They were life long members of the Amish church.
