Church records from the parish of Jördenstorf, Mecklenburg-Schwerin, show that on 11 May 1847, Friedrich Joachim Martin was born to Ludwig Bastian, shepherd, from Marienhof and his wife, Sophia, born Schlorf. He was christened on 24 May 1847 by Pastor Kittel. Friedrich's christening witnesses were Friedrich Bastian, a shepherd from Lelkendorf; Joachim Wieting, and Sophia Leverenz.

Obituary from "Brillion News":
" Fred Bastian Sr. a well known resident of the town of Brillion, died last Wednesday. Decedent was born in Germany in 1847, coming to America with his parents in 1867, settling in the town of Brillion, where he has since resided. He was married to Caroline Persohn, who has preceded him in death. He is survived by five sons and three daughters. The sons are George, Henry, Lewis, Philip, all of the town of Brillion and Fred of Wrightstown. The daughters are Mrs. John Wolfmeyer and Mrs Richard Huebner of the town of Brillion, and Mrs. Rev. Weise of Sheboygan. A sister, Mrs. Wm. Schmidt, also survives, residing in Kansas. The funeral takes place today with services conducted in the Camp Ground Tabernacle, Rev. W. H. Elske of the German M.E. Church conducting same. The pall bearers are Henry, George, Fred, Lewis, and Philip Bastian and Richard Huebner."
