US Senator. A lawyer and graduate of Cumberland University, he held a number of judicial posts in Arkansas during his career rise. He served in both Houses of the Arkansas State Legislature, as Attorney General for Arkansas, and as an Associate Justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court from 1910 to 1916. Upon the death of Senator James P. Clarke in 1916, he resigned his judicial seat and was elected to fill the vacancy as a Democrat Senator from Arkansas to the United States Senate, serving from November 8, 1916 to March 3, 1821. He attempted to win re-election, but was defeated for the seat by Senator Thaddeus H. Caraway. In 1926 he was again appointed as an Arkansas State Supreme Court Justice, a role he served in until his death in 1934. (bio by: Russ)
