Early in the morning on October 31, 2010, a fire occurred in the apartment below hers. The fire spread so rapidly that there was nothing left of her apartment and very little left of the rest of the building when the fire department arrived. After extensive investigation, the police determined the man in the apartment below her had been operating a meth lab.
Michelle was preceded in death by an infant nephew, David Burdick, in 1992.
She was survived by her biological parents, Danny and Bonnie Burchard of Battle Creek; adoptive parents, John and Penny L'Esperance; two half siblings, Lorna and Scott Burdick of Battle Creek; nieces and nephews, Jennifer, Mindy, Jesse, Brittany, Jason, and Cheyenne.
On May 4, 2012, what would have been Michelle's 41st birthday, her ashes were spread across Wyandotte County Lake in Kansas City, KS.
