NEWTONVILLE -- Michael J. Laiacona , 81, of Newtonville, died Friday at his residence after a brief illness. He was born and educated in Troy, son of the late Nicholas and Santa Formica Laiacona . He was a graduate of Catholic Central High School. A veteran of WW II, he served in the US Air Force in England. Mr. Laiacona , known as the `Celery King`, was self-employed owner of Michael Laiacona Produce in Menands for over 50 years. He was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Latham, and a member of the Colonie Lodge of Elks. Mr. Laiacona was a long time friend of the Little Sisters of the Poor. He is survived by his wife, Angela Caruso Laiacona ; two daughters, Patricia `Patty` Laiacona , Loudonville, and Geri Ann Laiacona , Colonie; a son, James Laiacona , Melrose; seven grandchildren, Marlo, James and Michael Manico, all of Colonie, Matthew Manico, Roanoke, VA, Joshua Laiacona , Loudonville, and Daniel and Jesse Laiacona , both of Melrose; four brothers, Frank Laiacona , Newtonville, George Laiacona , Troy, Anthony Laiacona , Waterford, and Joseph Laiacona , Loudonville, and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews. He is predeceased by a sister, Angela Laiacona and a brother, Salvatore Laiacona . Funeral service 9:30 a.m. Wednesday from the Bowen Funeral Home, 97 Old Loudon Road, Latham and at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of the Assumption Church, Latham, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated. Friends are invited and may call Tuesday 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Interment in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands. Contributions in his memory may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 1 Jeanne Jugan Dr., Latham, or Community Hospice of Albany, 315 South Manning Blvd., Albany, NY 12208.
