James E. Devenport (a.w.a. Davenport) was born on 29 Jan 1859 in Victory, Vernon Co, WI, the eldest of four sons born to William H. Devenport and Edna Noble.

He was just a toddler in Wheatland, Bad Axe Co, WI when in 1862 his father enlisted in the Civil War as a Private in Co L, 1st WI Veteran Cavalry.

His father died in the Civil War just two months before James' was to turn six years old. His mother remarried in 1869 when James was ten, to Edward Naylor, a widower with five grown children. This new family moved to Utica/Mount Sterling, Crawford Co, WI.

In the 1880 Federal Census, James is enumerated in the household of Henry Eitsert, in Freeman, Crawford Co, WI, listed as a servant/laborer. As fate would have it, James fell in love with the bosses daughter.

James married Miss Mary Catherine Eitsert in 1886 in Freeman, Crawford Co, WI, the second of seven children born to the marriage of Henry Eitsert and Marion Cordelia Hulce.

James and Mary had five children: Henry Chester, Edward Noble, Mary, George and Marion Eitsert. Mary and George died young.

James and Mary remained living with her parents and working their farm until Mary's death.

Mary died in Freeman, Crawford Co, WI on 03 Feb 1911 aged 48 Years 1 Months 3 Days.

James never remarried, remaining a widower for thirty-one years.

In 1930, James is enumerated with his daughter and son-in-law, Marion E & Joseph J Nutter in Utica, Crawford Co, WI.

James died on 29 Oct 1942 in Prairie du Chien, Crawford Co, WI, aged 83 Years 9 Months 0 Days.
