Family lore has it that Hugh "Newa" McNamee was born in Wales although it is also believed he is the Hugh McNamee that came from County Donegal, Ireland as a convicted felon mentioned on one of the ship passenger lists in about 1741. In 1795 in Maryland Hugh McNamee was deposed as a witness in a court case. In his deposition he stated that his age was 52, which meant he was born in 1743-44. This means he is not the Hugh that came from County Donegal.

Chester Co. tax list lists a Hugh McNamee in 1766 as being a shoemaker, w/one horse and no property. If this is this Hugh then he and Alice must have had their first 3 children in PA. although his children supposedly born in Maryland as stated on Census records.
"Proprietary Tax Lists of the County of Chester ...: 1765-1769, 1771" - Page 170 By Chester County (Pa.)
This Hugh may be either his father or relative.

"Alice probably married the Hugh McNamee who was paid a day's wages in Chester County in 1756 (seeBuffington-Marshall Papers, Chester County Historical Society), before moving to Hagerstown, Maryland."
I believe they were more likely married about 1760 when Alice finished her indenture. Children:
1. Job McNamee
2. Thomas McNamee
3. Hannah McNamee
4. Maria "Mary Polly" McNamee
5. Adam McNamee
6. George McNamee
7. Marguareta Gettee McNamee
8. Alice McNamee
9. Moses McNamee

There, on 9 August 1800, Alice McNamee and Job McNamee signed an administrator's bond for the estate of Hugh McNamee, deceased; see Washington County, Administrators Bonds, A: 22, available as Family History Library microfilm 0,014,662. Therefore he died before August 9, 1800.

The Gaelic name for Hugh is Newa. Another controversy is the identity of his wife. Her name was Alice but there are two it could be; Alice Seeds or Alice Fling. As proved in an article, "Was She Really Alice Fling? Righting a Wrong Identity," by Kay Haviland Freilich, it is now determined that her name was Alice Seed or Seeds.

I have seen that Hugh was in the Revolutionary War.
Military service: 17 Jan 1776, Enrolled in first military company organized in Hagerstown.
"History of Western Maryland: being a history of Frederick ..., Volume 1" page 1190.

1783 Tax Assessment of Washington County, Maryland: Hugh McNernie, 100 acres of part of "Boston." Lower Antietam and Sharpsburg.
