New Jersey, USA
Death: Jan. 1, 1897
Morris County

US Congressman. Elected as a Democrat to represent New Jersey's 5th District in the US House of Representatives, he served two terms, from 1875 to 1879. The great-grandson of prominent New Jersey politician Silas Condict, Cutler was born in Morristown, attended Yale College, and was admitted to the bar in 1849. He served as prosecutor of pleas for Morris County (1856 to 1861), President of the State Board of Education (1870), as a member of the New Jersey Senate (1871 to 1874), and as a delegate to the New Jersey Constitutional Convention (1873). During his second term in the US House Cutler was Chairman of the Committee on Agriculture. He did not seek reelection in 1878, and was unsuccessful in winning back his seat in 1880 and 1896. He died in Morristown seven weeks after losing the latter election. (bio by: Bobb Edwards)
