Paradise resident Emmett Elston, who served with Gen. "Black Jack" Pershing in the U.S. Army, died Sunday at N.T Enloe Hospital in Chico. He was 87.
Mr. Elston enlisted in the Army in 1916. Prior to World War I, he served with Cen. Pershing in Mexico where they fought against Pancho Villa. During World War I he served in France.
He was born Sept. 27, 1896, in Centergrove Township, Iowa. An inspector with the Los Angeles Department of water and Power for many years, he came to Paradise in 1961 from Hollywood.
He was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons and the Employer Retirement Association of L.A., Department of Water and Power.
He is survived by his wife, Virginia [McClintock b. 1 April 1899 Rush Creek, KS, d. 27 Jan 1990, Butte County, CA] of Paradise.
No services are being held following cremation at Rose Chapel Crematory. Private committal services will be at later date.
Local arrangements were under the direction of Rose Chapel Mortuary.
