George Daugherty, brother of John Daugherty, born in Marietta, Ohio, aged 78 years, died at his residence two miles west of Jonesboro 27 Jul 1877. He had six sons and five daughters. A son, George Daugherty died in the army during the Civil War and one daughter died before him. He also had six stepchildren. W. C. Whitlock was a stepson.

The following DOUGHERTY family letters were written before the Civil War and were passed down through the family by Margaret Malinda HINESLEY (the step-daughter of George DOUGHERTY), who married William NICOLAIDES. The original letters are now a part of the Genealogy Society of Southern Illinois's Archives and are kept at John A. Logan College in Carterville, Illinois.

George DOUGHERTY was born ca. 1799 in Marietta, Ohio. He was a brother of Lt. Gov. John DOUGHERTY and the son of Charles and Elizabeth (WOLF) DOUGHERTY. He came to Union Co., Illinois, with his widowed mother in 1812. The DOUGHERTY family, Iike the HUNSAKERs, KIMMELs, GRAMMERs, PENRODs, WIGLEs, and numerous other Union County families, are thought to have been Dunkards and Elizabeth (WOLF) DOUGHERTY was a relative of the locally famous Dunkard preacher, George WOLF.

George DOUGHERTY married four times in Union Co., Illinois:

1. 3 Aug 1820, Rachel HUNSAKER by George WOLF

2. 4 Mar 1835, Mrs. Mary Jane GRAMMER born ca. 1811 in Kentucky (George DOUGHERTY was named executor of the will of Jacob GRAMMER, who died in Union County 5 Sep 1845.)

3. 13 Jun 1854, Mrs. Elizabeth Margaret (QUIGLEY) WHITLOCK born ca. 1815 in Ohio, the widow of William C. WHITLOCK, who died 20 Sep 1851 in Union County. (The heirs of William WHITLOCK were: James H. WHITLOCK, Elizabeth Caroline KIMMEL, Benjamin C. WHITLOCK, Ophelia WHITAKER, Jonathon WHITLOCK, Penina J. WHITLOCK, Garrett WHITLOCK, Thomas J. WHITLOCK, Edward WHITLOCK, William C. WHITLOCK, and Piety WHITLOCK--Probate box W-321, Union Co., Illinois.)

4. 22 Jul 1875, Mrs. Samila Leach (HAMILTON) HINESLY born 11 Jan 1835, the widow of James HINESLY and daughter of James HAMILTON of North Carolina.

George DOUGHERTY died 28 July 1877 (his obituary says 27 July) in Union Co., IIIinois, and was buried in Kimmel Cemetery in an unmarked grave. His personal estate at the time of his death was appraised at $531.90 and included, among numerous other articles, one bookcase and books, $2.50 and lot of pill bags and bottles, worth .50, somewhat supporting the family tradition (unproven) that George DOUGHERTY was a doctor. He also owned an 80 acre homestead in the west half, southeast quarter, section 10, township 12 south, range 2 west.

The obituary of George DOUGHERTY in the Jonesboro Gazette states that:

" ...He was an upright, honorable citizen, a good man in every sense of the word, respected and esteemed by all, young and old. By occupation he was a farmer and for many years resided on his farm two miles west of town``. ...He was a man of firm moral and political principles and although quiet and unassuming, with such men as John R. NAILL, dcd., and Judge Daniel HILEMAN, he watched and directed the growth and prosperity of our county in the days of 'auld lang syne.' For twenty-eight years his name has appeared on the books of the GAZETTE as a subscriber who was never in arrears. He had a 1arge family connection in this county, all wealthy respectable citizens. In the death of Mr. DOUGHERTY, Union county loses another of her old landmarks and one whose place will be hard to fill. It may be truly said that no one ever enjoyed the confidence and respect of his neighbors and friends to a greater degree than did Uncle George DOUGHERTY."
