John Bennett, 92, Montana pioneer and longtime resident of Helena, died Sunday morning in St. John's Hospital.
Mr. Bennett was born Nov. 15, 1865, in Galena, Ill. He came to the Montana Territory at the age of 11 with his mother and father, Sarah and Sam Bennett. He grew up in Montana and drove the stage from Ft. Shaw to Great Falls and wagon freight from Helena to Great Falls.
Mr. Bennett also had the distinction of owning and operating the first rubber-tired, horse-drawn hack in Helena.
He had been in retirement for the past 20 years. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1918, and a son and a daughter. He is survived by five grandchildren and eight
great-grandchildren.
The body is at Retz Funeral Home. Arrangements are pending.
