Suggested edit contribution from John Martin Hein:
I have suggested a change to the death vital for this memorial based on the discovery of Asa Messenger's Iowa death record at Ancestry. He died in 1882 not 1880 making his calculated birth spot on, with the year 1799 in agreement with census data. Here is the death record citation:
Iowa, U.S., Death Records, 1880-1904, 1921-1951. Database with images. Ancestry (https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/827425:61442 : Accessed 16 Dec
2021) Entry for Asa Messenger, Image 34 of 703.

The following bio information about Asa Messenger is constructed from Census Data.

Asa Messenger was born about 1799 in Genesee Valley, New York (source Clinton Asa Messenger death certificate). His father was born in England and his mother was born in Wales. He married Nancy Young. In 1850, he was 51 living in Toby, Clarion, Pennsylvania, with Nancy and their children, Joseph 20, Asa 14, Eleanor 12, and Phebe 10. Note: I am assuming "Eleanor" is "Helen".

Between 1850 and 1870, Asa and Nancy moved to Garden Plain, Whiteside, Illinois, and lived with their daughter Helen and her husband, John Minta, and their children Eda 5 and Alvin 4. The 1880 census shows both Asa and daughter Helen living with Helen's children, Eda 15 and Alvin 14 in the same Illinois location. (Ancestry Brown Family Tree shows Asa's wife Nancy died August 24, 1877 in Whiteside, Illinois at age 78)

Sometime after 1880, Asa, Helen and Eda and Alvin moved to Douglas Township, Audubon County, Iowa, as Asa's and Helen's graves are in the Douglas Township cemetery.
