Mary Ellen ("Nellie") Welch was born about 1866 in Missouri, daughter of Francis Welch, and married John A. Rock on 16 January 1886 in Kansas City, Missouri. Three weeks after their wedding and while on their honeymoon, they were passengers in a derailment of a Missouri Pacific train on 6 February 1886. Nellie was seriously injured, suffering broken ribs and a spinal injury, leaving her a partial invalid the remainder of her life. They filed a lawsuit against the Missouri Pacific for $20,000, but only received $1,600.

Nellie gave birth to their first child, a daughter, Mary Elizabeth (nicknamed "Bessie") in October 1886. She gave birth to another child, a boy, in 1888, but he survived only days or hours, and his name is unknown. A third child, named James Francis (and nicknamed "Buzz"), was born in 1889, and a fourth, another infant boy of unknown name, survived only a few weeks. Nellie's father, a Civil War veteran, died in 1892, and she died of typhoid fever in 1894, in Kansas City, Kansas.

Her remains repose in an unmarked grave in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Kansas City, Kansas. Records of burials in St. John's burned in a fire about 1921, and without a gravestone, the exact location of Nellie's grave in the Cemetery is now unknown.
