John William Elmore, Jr. was born in 1843 in Henry County, Alabama, to the parents of John William Elmore, Sr. (1800-1851) & Martha Ann Sims-Elmore (1806-1884). He was the tenth child of twelve children born to this family. He married Drucilla Jane Messer-Elmore, December 4, 1861, in Henry County, Alabama, and one son William James Elmore was born March 1862. John W. Elmore, Jr. died at Corinth, MS on 4 Oct. 1862; he appears on the Register of Soldiers of the Army of Confederate States who were killed in battle, or who died of wounds or disease. He died Oct. 4, 1862, Corinth, wounds. It is believed by family that John W. Elmore, Jr. is buried in a mass grave somewhere near Corinth, MS. Corinth is near Shiloh, TN battlefield. There is a national cemetery at Shiloh, but the Confederates were buried in mass graves. There are markers identifying the mass graves, but there are no marked graves of Confederate soldiers. John W. Elmore, Jr. enlisted in Capt. Searcy's Company of Alabama Volunteers on March 18, 1862, at Lawrenceville, Henry County, Alabama, for a period of three years of the war. He is listed as brother of James K.P. Elmore (Co H), and brother-in-law to George T. Grace (Co H).
