Actress. Born Mary Margaret Wood in Brooklyn, New York, she began her career singing and performing in Broadway musicals. She made her film debut in "Wonder of Women" (1929), appeared in "A Star is Born" (1937) and is best remembered for the role of 'Mother Abbess' in the classic musical "The Sound of Music" (1965). From 1949 to 1957, she played matriarch Marta Hansen, in the TV series "Mama" and as Dr. Kate Nolan on the daytime soap "One Life to Live" in 1969.
