Obit Hart Co. Newspaper
News reached Hartwell last Monday of the killing of Mr. J. E. Vickery, of Lindale, Tex. by Ira McDougal, his cousin. The death of Mr. Vickery was the culmination of a dispute over a debt which Mr. Vickery claimed to be due him by Mr. McDougal.
The deceased was a merchant at Lindale and on Friday, August 27th, Mr. McDougal approached Mr. Vickery at the store of the deceased and after a heated discussion, Mr. McDougal drew a single-barrell shot gun and fired, the entire load entering at the base of Mr. Vickery's neck, the two men being only a few feet apart and in front of the store of Mr. Vickery. Death was instantaneous.
The funeral was conducted at Lindale Sunday followed by the Tom Green Camp of Confederate Veterans.
Mr. Vickery was born and reared in Hart County, where he also reared a family. He is the father of Mrs. Joe F. Holbrook, and Mrs. J. K. Brown and also has a sister, Mrs. A. J. Cleveland and a brother, Mr. John M. Vickery, still living in Hart, besides hundreds of other relatives.
