Robert Archer "Arch" Dixon was born on December 17, 1889 at 14 Derby Street, Westgate, Newcastle upon Tyne, Northumberland County, England. He was the son of James Dixon (1855-1892) and his wife Alice Bell (1854-1910). When his father died leaving a large family of small children, his mother Alice allowed Arch to be adopted by his first cousin Elizabeth Dixon (1859-1945) and her husband Robert Orton (1853-1931). His adopted siblings were Elizabeth Jane Orton (1877-1970), who married the Reverend Peter Ivison; Eleanor Orton (1880-?); Ethel Orton (1886-1967), who married Fred Casson; and Richard Dixon Orton (1895-1950). Robert Archer Dixon "Arch" Orton was married to Mabel Margaret Smith on December 20, 1910 at Morpeth, Northumberland County, England.
