Allie was born in Park River, Walsh, North Dakota to Michael and Emma Nelson Fox. Grandchild of Irish immigrants Michael Fox Sr and Mary McCullugh.

When he was 3 years old his mother died in childbirth devastating the family. His father gave the children to relatives to raise as he continued to work as a farm laborer and died working in Montana when Allie was 16. Allie's siblings were: Elizabeth "Bessie", Grace, and Emmett. His siblings all grew up in different parts of the country with different Fox or Nelson relatives.

Allie went to live with his father's sister Elizabeth Fox. For a time he lived in California and eventually returned to Minnesota where his brother Emmett lived.

He was on his way to serve in World War 1 with the US ARMY Battery B 143d Field Artillery Regiment. However he was send to Camp Mills in New York in August 1918. It is surmissed that he had the flu and survived, but suffered permanent disability for the remainder of his life. He was discharged from military in October 1918.
