She was the wife of Leo Strickman. They had been married since 1937. Born in Manistee, Mich., a daughter of the late Julius and Carrie (Davidson) Newmark, she had lived in North Plainfield, N.J., before moving to Fall River in 1940.
Mrs. Strickman had been an English and theater teacher and librarian at Somerset High School for many years, and helped produce student plays and musicals. She also taught at Ruggles School, Fall River, and in New Jersey, and taught the country's first worker's education class, sponsored by the Board of Education.
She was very active in the Fall River Little Theater, and in 1963 helped make the movie Below the Hill, the first full-length film made in Fall River. She also volunteered for the Trinity Repertory Company, in Providence, where she helped to create access for the handicapped.
In 1998, she and her husband were honored by the Fall River Arts Unlimited for their contribution to the arts.
She was also a social worker, and worked for the state Board of Children's Guardians in New Jersey.
She was a graduate of the former New Jersey College for Women, now Douglass College, and was the first president of the League of Women Voters on campus. She did graduate work at Rutgers University and The New School, New York City.
She was involved with the Alliance for the Mentally Ill and was a member of Brandeis Women's Association, Hadassah, and Temple Beth-El, in Fall River.
Besides her husband, she leaves a son, Peter Strickman of Boston; a daughter, Bonnie Strickman of Newport and New York City; a sister, Helen Newmark Snyder of Uniontown, Pa., and Boynton Beach, Fla.; and a brother, Herbert Newmark of Center Moriches, N.Y., and Coconut Grove, Fla. She was the mother of the late Michael Strickman.
The funeral will be held tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Temple Beth-El, 385 High St. Burial will be in Temple Beth-El Cemetery.
