ASHTABULA Madge A. Pontius, age 95, of Ashtabula, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011, in the Hospice Unit at the Ashtabula Co. Medical Center.

She was born June 17, 1915, in Columbus, Ohio, the daughter of Earl C. and Erma A. (White) Pierpont and had lived in Ashtabula since 1951, coming from Columbus. Mrs. Pontius had a Bachelor of Science degree in education and a nursing degree from The Ohio State University and a Master's Degree in Guidance & Counseling from Mills College in Oakland, Calif. She was married to Judge Roland Pontius on Nov. 22, 1951 in Columbus.

Mrs. Pontius retired as Executive Director of Ashtabula Co. Regional Home Health Services in 1981. Her career included being Associate Director of Nursing with Professor status at The Ohio State University Hospitals and instructor in nursing at both the Highland-Alameda County Hospital in Oakland, Calif. and the Santa Clara County Hospital in San Jose, Calif. She also taught health education at Harbor High School.

She was a founding member of Home Health Services of Ashtabula County, Hospice of Ashtabula Co. and the Director of the Ashtabula County Senior Citizens at the YMCA (now the Senior Center). She served three terms as Ward 5 councilwoman in Ashtabula and was the city's interim Director of Public Health for the City Health Department. She was a board member on the Area Agency on Aging, served on the Ashtabula Co. Health Action Council, served as a volunteer guardian with the Patrick Sorohan Guardianship Program through Catholic Charities and was a charter member of the Ashtabula County Bar Auxiliary.

Her hobbies included gardening, collecting antiques and coins and re-finishing furniture. She was an avid bridge player and was active in multiple bridge clubs. She is well loved by all her children, their spouses and grandchildren and greatly respected as a community leader.

Survivors include two children, David E. (Lynn) Pontius and Patricia A. (Gregory) Seymour, both of Ashtabula; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Earl Pierpont of Ocala, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Roland in 1978; a daughter, Virginia Cawley; and sisters, Virginia Miller and Beulah Owens.

Funeral Services will be held 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 26th, at the Ashtabula Home of FLEMING & BILLMAN FUNERAL DIRECTORS, 526 W. Prospect Road, Ashtabula, with Bishop Elizabeth Eaton, of the N.E. Ohio Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be in Edgewood Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, at the Funeral Home.
