The former Agnes Christenson married Matt Sanpaka on June 21, 1941 in Stonington, and he preceded her in death on July 23, 1982. Agnes was employed at Marble Arms in Gladstone for many years until her retirement. She was a member of the Rapid River Congregational Church, Rapid River Omni Center, the Stonington Booster Club, the hurb Club and the Rapid River Axillary American Legion Post No. 301. Agnes enjoyed cooking, baking, hunting, gardening, playing horseshoes and spending time with friends and family.
She was selected to be the Grand Marshall of the 2007 Rapid River Memorial Day Parade. Agnes C. Sanpaka is survived by: Several nieces and nephews including: Arlene (Kurt) Vittetoe of Kansas City, Mo., Marge (Don) Canfield of Newberry, Mike (Joyce) Sanpaka of Escanaba, Dave (Karen) Sanpaka of Escanaba, Terry (Sigrid) Fickeres of Long Island, N.Y., Larry (Judy) Fickeres of Ishpeming, Kathleen Allen of St. Augustine, Fla.; several great-nieces and nephews; sister-in-law Betty Porter of Escanaba and special friends Mark and Chuck.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her siblings Orvin, Edna, Murial, Ruth, Clifford and Marvin and two nieces Ruth Smith and Carol Cretens.
Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Feb. 28, 2011, at the Anderson Funeral Home in Gladstone. Rapid River Axillary American Legion services will be conducted at 3:45 p.m. Monday at the Anderson Funeral home Chapel.
Funeral services celebrating the life of Agnes C. Sanpaka will be held at 4 p.m. Monday at the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. William Rafuse officiating. A luncheon will be served following the funeral service at the Rapid River Congregational Church.
Burial will take place in the Rapid River Cemetery.
