Elias was the son of John Hoffman and Anna Enterline. Elias never married. He attended college at Millersville, and became a schoolteacher. Elias's bible was passed down to his sister Mary Ellen (Sheetz) Hoffman, and then to her daughter Sarah Ellen (Sheetz) Hoffman. He died of consumption at age 26, according to information written down in an heirloom family photo album.
