Born in Limerick to Major Philip Sullivan of Ardea and his wife Joan, daughter of Dermod McCarthy of Killoween, whom fled Ireland after the Battle of Orange for France. They were on the losing side, Roman Catholics. John came to New England at age 41 and settled in Berwick, Maine, where he became a renowned school master.
