Jess was born on Jan. 25, 1925, in Waco to Benjamin and Minnie Crowley Roberts. He attended Waco public schools and graduated from Gatesville High in 1943. After graduation Jess entered the Navy and served aboard a war ship in the Pacific for almost three years during WWII. He was discharged in 1946. In 1947, Jess went to work for S.W. Bell and retired in 1980 after more than 33 years of service. Jess was a longtime member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. He married Ina Markum on March 13, 1958, and she died in March of 2004. Jess loved the outdoors, camping with his family, playing golf, fishing and gardening.
Jess was also preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Frances Pollard and N.M. Nail, and stepson John Adkins.
Surviving Jess are daughters, Tanya Compton of China Spring and Pamela Harris of Dallas; brothers, Ben "Buddy" Roberts of China Spring and Ray Roberts of Waco; sister, Mildred Duncan of Waco; brother-in-law, W. E. Markum of Waco; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be David Adkins, Bill Alford, Ben Irvin, Reese Killion, Keith Roberts, and Ronald Ray Roberts.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul's Episcopal Church.
