Mrs. Verlene Miles Carter, 88, passed away Saturday night (February 19, 2011) at Twin Oaks Convalescent Center in Alma after an extended illness.

She was born on April 11, 1922 in Bacon County where she has resided all her life. She was a 1940 graduate of Rockingham High School where she was a member of the basketball team. She retired from Bacon County High School as a secretary. Mrs. Carter was also a member of First Baptist Church Alma where she served as a Sunday School teacher and was a member of Seekers Sunday School Class.

She is the daughter of the late Jerry Kelly Miles and Sally Boatright Miles. She is also preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Jackson Clarence Carter, Jr.; and three brothers, Buck Miles, Burton Miles and Kenny Miles.

Survivors include three children, Jackie Carter Johnson (husband Zack) of Alma, James Henry Carter (wife B ertha) of Alma, and Jeanene Carter Gilder (husband Fred) of Glenwood; one brother, Jack Miles of Richmond Hill; her sister-in-law, Kathleen Carter McDonald of Alma; nine grandchildren, Jackie Lee Johnson, Jennifer Johnson Pope, Morris Johnson, Jack Johnson, Crystal Carter Epps, Cherry Carter Music, Anna Gilder Richardson, Abby Gilder Avery and Allie Brinn Gilder; ten great grandchildren, Claudia Pope, Helen Pope, Woodson Pope, Carter Music, Jackson Johnson, Lawton Johnson, Gracie Lee Johnson, Morrisa Johnson, Braxton Belle Richardson, and Asa Avery; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.

A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday (February 22, 2011) at First Baptist Church Alma. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6 until 8 p.m. Monday at the church in Alma.

Music Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
