Pioneer of Milam is Buried at Kosse

Funeral services for George Daniel Hooker, 70, a native of this county, were held on Wednesday, August 22, at Kosse, at the First Baptist Church. Mr. Hooker who had been in ill health for some time, passed away at his home on Tuesday afternoon, August 22 at 3:30 o'clock. He underwent an operation at a Temple hospital on May 22, 1939, and remained in the hospital for several weeks under treatment. Given little hope for improvement of their father and a limited time for him to live, by the doctors, the family dedicated itself to making his last days as comfortable and happy as possible.

He was brought to Cameron for a brief visit with a beloved daughter, Mrs. Sam Deer, and family after leaving the hospital, and from here he went to his Marlin home where he was nursed lovingly until the end came. Mr. Hooker would have been seventy-one years old, had he lived until the seventeenth of this month, September. he had been unusually healthy all of his life until stricken with the lingering illness that proved fatal, but unaccustomed as he was to suffering and sickness, he bore his pain patiently and was hopeful of recovery until he died.

Mr.Hooker, a retired Santa Fe employee, had been in railroad service for about fifty-three years. He and Eva Allen of Milano were married in May 1887 at the age of nineteen and fifteen, respectively. They spent most of their married life in this county, though located at various time in Houston, Kosse, Lott and other places. Mr. Hooker was the son of J. D. Hooker, Milam county's first judge.

He is survived by his devoted wife, two brothers, Freeman Hooker of Milano and Charles Hooker of Lott; and six children, Mrs. Roy Fulton of Lott, Mrs. Sam Deer of Cameron, Mrs. Alfred Norquist of Austin, Mrs. Godfrey Jennings of Kosse, G.D. Hooker, Jr. and Carl Hooker of marlin. There are seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Sidney and Joe Frank Greenless of Cameron.

Though first a member of the Christian Church, Mr. Hooker accepted the Baptist doctrine in 1924 and joined Milano Baptist Church at that time. At the time of his death, his letter rested in the Marlin Church where his oastor, Rev. Mr. Wright was a beloved neighbor.

Tribute was paid to Mr. Hooker as a devoted husband and father, a generous friend, and a kindly neighbor. He had many friends in the cities he called hom, who remember him lovingly.

Cameron relatives attending the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Sam Deer and son, George, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Greenless and sons, Sidney and Joe Frank, and Mr. and Mrs. Prothro Deer who came from Manvel to join the family.

Pall bearers were nephews of Mr. and Mrs. Hooker, Jack Hooker of Lott, J.R. Lee of Houston, Warren and R. L. Allen of Marlin, Wayne Allen of Kosse, and Clyde Greenless of Cameron and Jimmy Johnson of Waco.

A blanket of roses for the casket was a tribute from the children, and many other beautiful floral offerings covered the grave.
