Nathan Ash Killed
Knocked Down and Run Over on Broadway by a Brewer's Wagon
Nathan Ash was killed by being run over on Broadway at 5:15pm yesterday. He is about 45 years of age, and his home is in North Evans, where he leaves a wife. His niece is married to a butcher at No 101 Broadway. Ash was visiting them during the afternoon. At the time he was killed he was running out to get on a car to come down down (sic). He ran between two wagons, one of which was a heavy one owned by the Gambrinus Brewing Company on Broadway. Before the driver could stop the pole struck Ash on the head, cutting a gash in his temple. He was knocked down and run over. His ribs were badly fractured and he was injured internally. The Fitch ambulance was called and he was taken to the Hospital. He died as he was being put in the ambulance. Bystanders told Patrolman Lee of the Third Precinct that the driver was driving fast and whipping the team when Ash was struck. Lee immediately put the man under arrest. He is William Wackerla of No. 806 Jefferson Street.
Coroner Tucker was notified and sent the remains to the Morgue. He then ordered the driver to be released. The Gambrinus Company is responsible for his appearance when wanted. A jury will be empaneled this morning and an inquest will be held.
