Brooklet - Mr. Hamp Smith, age 101, died early Friday at Willow Pond under the care of Ogeechee Area Hospice. He was a native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County and had lived in Brooklet since 1932 where he was the oldest living resident at the time of his death. Mr. Smith was a graduate of Georgia's Agricultural College in 1921, formerly Georgia's Teacher's College, then Georgia Southern University. He was employed by Savannah Sugar Refinery a a head machinist. Mr. Smith was a loyal member of the Brooklet First Baptist Church for many years. He was a member of the Men's Senior Adult Sunday School Class and was the only ever appointed deacon emeritus of Brooklet First Baptist Church. He was a self-appointed maintenance man at the church for many years and also served in all positions at the church except pastorial or musical. Mr. Smith helped in the bricking of Brooklet First Baptist Church after World War II, was the coordinator and founder of the Bible distribution for all high school graduates and was appointed the baptismal coordinator for years. Mr. Smith was a Life Member of the Shriner's Club for 50 years. He joined the Mason's nearly 80 years ago and was believed to be the oldest living Mason in the United States. He was past Grand Marshall of the Brooklet Peanut Festival and was a member of the Keenage Club. Hamp Smith was known as a missionary in his own community and he lived the life he believed in, he was a true man of God. He was preceded in death by his beloved and cherished wife of 52 years, Ethel McCormick Smith; and his first wife, Lola Wyatt, of 22 years.
Surviving are his brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and Mrs. Harold C. Smith of Greenville, S.C.; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The funeral service for Mr. Smith will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Brooklet First Baptist Church with Rev. Randy Waters and Elder Emory Proctor officiating. Burial will be in the Brooklet City Cemetery. Hodges-Moore Funeral Home.
