Jake Overgaauw was born on December 25, 1927, to Marinus and Adriana (Buitendyk) Overgaauw in Nobles County, near Leota, Minnesota. As a young child, he moved with his parents to a farm near Woodstock, Minnesota, where he was raised and attended country school in District #49. Upon completion of his education, he moved with his family to a farm in Fountain Prairie Township of Pipestone County, Minnesota where he helped on the farm.
On February 4, 1949, he was united in mariage to Sylvia Zeinstra at the Christian Reformed Church in Holland, Minnesota. Following their marriage, they farmed near Holland and Ruthton, Minnesota. In March, 1966, they moved to their current farm near Ruthton. On January 21, 1970, Sylvia preceded him in death. He was united in marriage to Marlene Vos on February 26, 1971, at Peace Lutheran Church in Ruthton. After their marriage, they continued to farm until his retirement in April of 1994.
On Sunday, March 14, 1999, Jake died unexpectedly at his home near Ruthton at the age of 71 years, 2 months amd 17 days. Jake enjoyed his life as a dairy farmer.
He is lovingly remembered by his three children, Sandra Otter and her husband, Mark of Pipestone, Minnesota; Jason Overgaauw and his wife, Stacey of Lake Wilson, Minnesota; and James Overgaauw of Ruthton, Minnesota; two grandchildren, Stacey and Michael Carlson; six brothers, John Overgaauw of Scandia, Minnesota, Francis Overgaauw of Artesia, California, Willis Overgaauw of Ontario, California, Cornelius Overgaauw of Lakewood, California, Peter Overgaauw, and Marinus Adrian Overgaauw of St. Paul, Minnesota; four sisters, Pearl Smith of Pipestone, Minnesota, Wilhelmina Kuyper and her husband Gilbert of Pipestone, Minnesota, Cornelia Zeinstra of Holland and Jacoba Boersma of Pipestone, Minnesota.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Zeinstra Overgaauw, his parents and two sisters.
