Newspaper Article:
W. H. Portner

W. H. Portner, superintendent of the Gadsden Car Works, and a city alderman, has been chosen vice-president of the Etowah Trust & Savings bank, to fill the vacancy recently caused by the death of E. W. Whips. A member of the board of directors of the bank to fill the place caused by the death of Mr. Whips, and choice of Mr. Portner as vice-president has not been chosen.

Mr. Portner has had a remarkable career. He has been with the Queen & Crescent system in its mechanical department for thirty-eight years and by hard work and close attention to business has been promoted from one position to another until now he holds the responsible office of superintendent of the Gadsden Car Works.

When Mr. Portner first took charge of the works in this city in 1905, it was a very small plant and employed only a few men; now the plant covers twenty-two acres and employs more than eight hundred men. It is said that the plant in this city produces the best results of any works on the Southern system and it is owning to Mr. Portner's splendid ability as a manager that this is made possible. He has a winsome personality and is exceedingly popular with his men.

Mr. Portner is servicing his second term as alderman of the city and is considered one of the strong men on the council.

He has been a director of the bank since its organization, and has always taken great interest in its affairs. He is an indomitable worker and done much towards the splendid success which the institution has enjoyed.

Such a splendid business man as one of the vice-president of the bank is considered a decided asset.
