Jere Donald Ayers returned to the arms of our Heavenly Father on Friday, February 11, 2011, surrounded by his family. Jere fought a long and courageous battle with cancer and succumbed to a brain hemorrhage. Jere was born to Mary Jane and Louis Ayers on August 5, 1941, in Compton, Calif. Jere graduated from Ventura High School in Ventura, Calif. in 1960.
Jere worked at Pemex offshore oil, building offshore oil platforms. Jere then went onto inspecting the building of the Diablo Nuclear Power Plant. Then from there Jere moved onto Vandenberg, which is the site of the space shuttle. Jere was an inspector at this site for many years. When Jere retired from Vandenberg in 1997, he started his job with Construction Steel, moving to Enoch, to be closer to the church as well as pursue his love of hunting. He retired from Construction Steel in 2010.
Jere had a great love of the outdoors and enjoyed all of his free time hunting and taking long drives with his family looking at the beautiful state of Utah. Several years ago, Jere renewed his love of motorcycles and enjoyed riding his bike until the day before his passing. Jere went hunting every year that he lived in Utah and sometimes preferred going alone deep into the wilderness, always worrying his family. Jere always managed to hike out with his elk or deer off the mountain alone.
Jere also found a great new love at the end of his life when he and his wife adopted their great grandson, Wyatt Johnathan, who is now 18 months old. Jere was always amazed at Wyatt's antics and said that he had laughed more during the times with Wyatt than he had in his entire life.
Jere met his soul mate, Kay, in 1978. They were married in 1979 and two families became one. Jere and Kay made their home in Arroyo Grande, Calif. and enjoyed raising Arabian horses. Some of Kay's fondest memories together with Jere were the times they took trips together and riding their horses. When Jere and Kay married, I don't think he knew that his wife had such an amazing sense of humor. Kay loved playing practical jokes on him. Jere took all of the joking well even though he always acted serious and tried to pretend that she didn't get one over on him. Jere and Kay loved each other greatly and had a wonderful life together
Jere was a great father to all of his children and was there for each and every one of them. Jere's children loved and cherished their father and will miss him immensely. Jere also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren as well as his great grandchildren.
Jere leaves behind his wife Kay, and his children, Jere Jr., Christina (Jerry) Johnson, Dayna (David) Corder, Derry (Nichole), and Baby Wyatt. Jere also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Jesse, Shannon, Malissa, Nicole, Katrina, Bonnie Kay and Bailey. Jere also leaves behind six great grandchildren and two more on the way. Jere was preceded in death by his grandparents and his parents, Louis and Mary Jane Ayers.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, February 19, 2011, at the LDS Homestead Chapel on Midvalley and Tomahawk in Enoch City. A viewing will be held Friday, February 18, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, February 19, from 12:30 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. Jere will be laid to rest at the Enoch City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Wyatt Johnathan Ayers at Southwest Community Credit Union.
