Funeral services for Mrs. Fannie Frear, pioneer resident of Oakland, and mother of Walter F. Frear, former governor [3rd] and chief justice of Hawaii, will be held tomorrow at 11 a.m. from the family home, 1925 Tenth Avenue. Mrs. Frear died last night. She was 88 years old. Her husband, Dr. Walter Frear, widely known throughout the Congregational denomination in this country and an early pastor in Oakland, died two years ago at the age of 94.
Mrs. Frear was born in Boston. As a young girl she crossed the plains in a prairie schooner with her parents, her father being attracted here with the gold rush in 1849. The family settled near Placerville. With her husband, Mrs. Frear established her home in Oakland forty-one years ago.
Besides her son, Walter F. Frear, Mrs. Frear is survived by a second son, Hugh P. Frear, chief of the naval architecture department of the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation, of Pennsylvania, and three daughters. They are Mrs. Edward F. Woodward, of Santa Rosa, widow of the late Senator Woodward, former surveyor of the port of San Francisco; Mrs. Frederick Burk, wife of the president of the State Teachers' College [San Francisco State University] in San Francisco, and Miss Henrietta Frear.

Miss Mary O'Donnell, who is visiting friends in San Francisco, sent the following newspaper item to Mrs. Pauline C. Brownell:
Funeral services will be held tomorrow for Mrs. Fannie Elmira Frear, pioneer resident of California, who passed away yesterday at the family home in Oakland after a long illness.
Mrs. Frear celebrated her 88th birthday on January 29. She was born in Boston and came to California across the plains in 1852. Her father, William Foster, was one of the first settlers at Hangtown in 1849. Mrs. Frear was married in Placerville in 1885. Her husband, the late Rev. Walter Frear, D.D. died two years ago.
