U.S. Congressman. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1835 and commenced to practice law in Clarkesville, Georgia. He was solicitor general of the western judicial circuit of Georgia, (1843-47) and a member of the Georgia State House of Representatives, (1857-59). In 1859, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-sixth Congress and served until he resigned in 1861, to serve as a brigade inspector in the Confederate Army, during the Civil War. After the war, he was a judge of the Superior Court of Georgia, (1867-69, 73-82) and was appointed by President Arthur a member of the first United States Tariff Commission, in 1884.
