William E. McCumber, Nazarene preacher, college professor, revivalist, conference speaker, radio speaker, writer, poet and magazine editor passed away after 69 years of ministry on Monday, December 20, 2010 Gainesville, Georgia.

McCumber, 87, who served the Church of the Nazarene for 69 years, never recovered from a massive stroke he suffered December 18, Bruce L. McCumber, his son, wrote on McCumbers's website, www.wemccumber.com

He was serving as senior pastor at First Church of the Nazarene in Gainesville, Georgia, when he died. He had served there since 2004.

"He was a wonderful, loving father and husband, and he will be greatly missed," Bruce McCumber said.

McCumber is survived by his wife, his 4 sons and their wives, and his daughter; 14 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

W.E. McCumber served the church in various positions throughout his life. He was a former editor of the Herald of Holiness, and students in the 1971-72 school year at Pasadena College, now Point Loma Nazarene University, named him "Most Inspirational Professor" when he was a professor of religion. McCumber went on to serve as chair of the Religion Department from 1974 to 1978 at Eastern Nazarene College. Altogether, he served nine years as a professor in Nazarene higher education.

McCumber began his ministry in 1943 and was ordained in 1945 on the Florida District. He went on to pastor at Nazarene churches in Quincy, Massachusetts, Thomasville and Atlanta Georgia, and Lake Wales, Arcadia, and Ocala in Florida.

He authored more than a dozen books, and he wrote dozens of devotionals, poems, and various articles on the Christian faith. A list of his works is available on his website.

Funeral services are scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at 11 a.m. at First Church of The Nazarene with interment to follow in Memorial Park Cemetery. The Rev. Donald F. Moore III and Dr. Roy Rogers will officiate.
