He was driving a pick-up truck about 50 mph traveling west on St. Johns Ave, crossed SR19, and headed towards the St. Johns River Junior College where he failed to stop at the dead-end road in front of the college. His body was found partially in the truck and his head and shoulders were in the water where he apparently drowned.
Investigation was turned over to the Sheriff's Department. Allen S. Patten is the chief criminal investigator for the department.
Investigating officer, Trooper E. L. Jones, Jr., of the FHP went to the scene early Saturday on a call from Grant Tilley, the son of the College president, where he found the drowned man.
He was a veteran of World War II, being a recipient of the Purple Heart.
He was employed by Hudson for 15 years as a wood checker and had been a resident of Palatka for 20 years, coming from New Orleans.
He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Reathamae Palmer La Fontaine of Palatka; two stepsons, Robert F. Palmer and Charles Palmer of Palatka; three brothers, Joseph I., Norman Charles and Raymond Roger, all of New Orleans; three half sisters, Mrs. Hazel Hartebegen, Mrs. Thelma Hartebegen, and Mrs. Florence Julia Werle, all of New Orleans.
Funeral arrangements will be announced later. Masters Funeral Home is in charge. Palatka Daily News, Monday, 5 Apr 1965.
Funeral services were held at 10 this morning in Masters Memorial Chapel with Rev. Percy Tompkins officiating.
Interment was at Oak Hill East Cemetery.
