Norman Dean Ballenger, 73, of Rural Retreat, Ranson, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, at his residence.

Born Feb. 23, 1937, in Charles Town, he was the son of the late Robert B. Ballenger and Mary (Whitmore) Ballenger.

Mr. Ballenger retired after 20 years of service with the Charles Town Police Department, and worked several years with the Charles Town Water Department. Prior, he was parts manager with Merchant-Noland Chevrolet.

He was a Little League Baseball coach and Little League Basketball coach for many years.

Mr. Ballenger was of the Baptist faith.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Kay (Anderson) Ballenger at home; four children, Tammy S. Phillips of Winchester, N. Dean Ballenger and wife, Robyn, of Charles Town, Mary Gail Staubs and husband, Bryan, of Aiken, S.C., and William R. "Billy" Ballenger and wife, Amy, of Winchester; 10 grandchildren, Amanda Edwards, Brandon Ballenger, James Edwards, Lauren Winpigler, Ashley Ballenger, Breann Staus, Quentin Phillips, Benjamin Staubs, Chandler Ballenger and Anna Ballenger; two great-grandchildren, Jordan Edwards and Jaiden Edwards; and one brother, Donald L. Ballenger of Kearneysville.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one daughter, Sheila Kay Ballenger; one sister, Joan McDaniel; and one brother, Burrell A. "Buddy" Ballenger.

A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2011, at Charles Town Baptist Church, 203 E. Congress St., Charles Town, with Brother Brian Hotaling, Dr. Wyman Hall and Pastor Cedric Sullivan officiating.

Friends will be received from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Melvin T. Strider Colonial Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Salvation Army, 505 Virginia Ave., Martinsburg, WV 25401; or Jefferson County Community Ministries, 238 W. Washington St., Charles Town, WV 25414.
