Amos was born in Vermont, but in about 1811 the family moved to Canandaigua, NY where he ran Mead's Hotel, (possibly because his father was disabled due to obesity).
In the War of 1812, was a private in the 2nd Regiment Infantry in the company commanded by N. L. Clark. He applied for his land grant, which was approved in 1819. In about 1825 he went to Farmington, Mi. to claim the land grant & settle there.
He was instrumental in forming first Presbyterian Church in Farmington, Mi. in 1826.
Wherever he lived, Amos took an active part in local government and churches.
