John 'Jehu' Ambrose Emrie was the second child and second son born to John Glidden and Margaret Ross Emrie, his birth occuring on March 1, 1803 at New Market, Highland County, Ohio. Later five more children were to be born to the couple, two more sons and three daughters.
John Ambrose Emrie was married in Hillsboro, Ohio on April 2, 1825 to Miss Harriet Emma Stout.
Harriet was a daughter of John Nesbit Stout and Hannah Price Stout. After the couple had four children born in Ohio, the decision was made in about 1834 or 1835 to move to Aurora where the couple had three more children. The names of their children were: Margaret Ann, born December 31, 1825; Sarah Jane, born October 4, 1827; John Stout, born June 23, 1831; Mary Louisa, born November 13, 1833; James Samuel, born April 3, 1836 (first child of the couple born in Indiana); George Smith, born April 11, 1838; And Charles Kelsey, born August 21, 1841.
While a resident of Aurora John Emrie wore several caps working as a hotel keeper, farmer and a judge. From 1871 to 1873 John served as mayor of Aurora, being sworn to office at the advanced age of sixty-seven years. John does not appear in the 1859-60 directory, possibly because he lived in center township outside of the city of Aurora. It is likely that he was farming at the time.
At the time of his death John A. Emrie was working as a judge, as noted in the short notice published in the Lawrenceburgh Press on March 25, 1875: "Death of Judge Emrie - Judge J. Emrie, an old and highly respected citizen of this county, died at his residece in Aurora yesterday morning, after a long illness. Mr. Emrie was 72 years." Judge Emrie was laid to rest in Riverview Cemetery.
Mrs. Harriet Emrie, widow of Judge John A. Emrie, passed away in Aurora on July 12, 1881. She is buried with her husband of fifty years in Riverview Cemetery.
