Mary Ann was the oldest of 15 children born to John M. Morrarty and Mary M. Griswold of East Thompson, Connecticut. She may have had three husbands. On the 1850 census she was living at home with her parents, but her name was given as Mary Booth. She was then married in Killingly, CT on 15 March 1853 to Thomas W. Tillinghast; however, her name in the marriage record was Mary A. "Merrity" and not Booth. Following the death of Thomas, she married the widower, William Green Rose. She had two children with Thomas and three more with Wm G. Her maiden name, Morrarty, may be an anglicization of a French name, because this family originated in Nova Scotia.
