Son of Hiram and Julia Ann (Wilson) Rich. Hiram was post sutler at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas 1841-1862.
Married Mary Fontaine Cosby April 20, 1859 and they had a son Bradley Rich.
Lucius graduated West Point Military Academy July 1, 1853.
He resigned his commission May 13, 1861 and on June 22, 1861 at Memphis, Tennessee he enlisted in the Confederate Services of America.
Lucius was promoted to Colonel on April 1, 1862 and was commanding the 1st Missouri on April 6, 1862, the first day's fighting at Shilo, when he was wounded. Then taken to Okolona, Mississippi where he lingered until August 9, 1862.
His body could not be taken back to Fort Leavenworth for burial so he was buried in the family plot of Nelson W. Perry, a step-brother to his Father Hiram Rich.
