Death: Jan. 6, 2011

Born to Henry Allen, who preceded her in death, and Bernice Deligar Allen on February 8, 1949. She was educated in the Chester-Upland School District, graduating from Chester High School in 1970. Upon graduation from high school she enrolled in Keystone School of Business. Her quest for learning had no boundaries. She studied, and earned a license to become a cosmetologist from Wilfred Beauty Academy. With that she operated her own cosmetology business, as well as, lending her talents to various salons throughout Delaware County and Philadelphia, PA. In 1998, Lena attended Chestnut Hill College earning an Associate Degree in Paralegal Affairs. She completed studies at Brookstone College, North Carolina, receiving certification as a Nurse's Assistant. Lena, as we called her, was employed at the Delaware County Court House as a Court Clerk and then as a Domestic Relations Officer until she relocated to North Carolina. While in North Carolina she worked for the Bojangle's Southern Food Chain as a store manager to help finance her education at Brookstone. Her tenacity and pure determination motivated her efforts even as her illness threatened her success and presented setbacks. Lena's tenaciousness garnered her to the things she needed and wanted to do. Lena was born and raised in Temple Baptist Church, Chester, Pennsylvania. She was baptized under the pastorate of Reverend D. W White, where she sang in the White's Chorus, was a Jr. Usher, and attended Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. As a teenager, she rededicated her life to the Lord under the pastorate of Reverend Jeremiah W. Witherspoon. Later in her adult life, she joined Shiloh Baptist Church, Chester, Pennsylvania. She did not shy away from any tasks and accepted the role of co-chairperson for Shiloh's Women's Day. She also coordinated many gospel musical programs.
Lena's love for singing began with her mother and father, who taught her siblings, and her to sing gospel music in strict harmony. She and her sisters, Cheryle and Lynette (Penny), with their cousin, Darius Burton, Burton, began singing throughout the tri-state region as the Gospelettes, accompanied by Alma Lenard. They became the Allen Sisters when Darius moved, and Diana, Trayce and Dionne blended their voices. Lena was a master in detecting if someone was singing "out of tune" and she didn't mind telling you. She shared her melodious gift as lead, and backup singer with Michael Breakely and David Dixon, as the music group, The Fourth Edition.
Lena's desire to sing led her to join many choirs. She sang with The Voices of Hope in Mullica Hill, New Jersey, served as the supervisor for the Angelic Choir, sang with the United Voices and the Combined Choir of
Shiloh Baptist Church in Chester, Pennsylvania; and with The White Rock Christian Church Inspirational Choir, Chester, Pennsylvania. She also sang with The William Penn-Columbus School Choir in Chester, PA, where she traveled and did commercials for WHYY TV and Radio. Lena was an inspirational singer and continued to share her love for singing with Rod Bradley and Friends Choir until she could no longer lift her voice.
Lena loved the Lord. She ministered in song as she sang His praises and you felt His presence through her voice. Once you met Lena, you had to love her. Lena's memory will be cherished by her husband, Ronald Bradley, five children, Derrick Allen (Katrina), Frank Allen-Brewer, and Charnel Allen, of Charlotte, North Carolina; Darren Allen, and Vlenale Allen, of Chester, Pennsylvania; three stepchildren, Ronald, Jr., Ryan, and Renee Bradley; her mother, Bernice Deligar; five sisters, Cheryle Allen-Spells (Calvin), DE; Lynette Allen-Poole (Andrew), Sharon Hill, PA; Diana Allen, Chester, PA; Trayce Allen, Wilmington, DE; and Dionne Allen, Philadelphia, PA; three brothers, Henry Allen (Helena) Aleem Niam Abdullah (Darlene), of Chester, PA; and Curtis Allen, of Baltimore, MD ; four aunts, Louise Deligar Burton, FL; Willa Mae Deligar Thomas, Chester, PA; Catherine Deligar Cox (Benny), and Doris Deligar Brown, SC; an uncle, Hezekiah Deligar (Sarah) FL; twenty-eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends.
